In 1854 the 3 cent silver coin got a makeover, it was decided that more silver content in the coin would make it more valuable and people would use it more. So in 1854 the 3 cent silver coin was 90% silver and 10% copper.

With the added silver content the coin would very easy get scratch so the coins in circulation would maytime be a little more scratch than the coins before 1854 in the 3 cent silver coin series. The change in the content of the coin was a reason for the low population numbers for that year only 671,000 where minted of the 1854 3 cent piece
